Targeted strategies for each SAT Math content area, including Desmos calculator techniques and pacing tips.
The SAT Math section covers four content areas: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Each area rewards specific strategies.
Algebra
Algebra questions focus on linear equations, systems of equations, and functions. Practice translating word problems into equations quickly, and use the Desmos calculator to solve systems graphically when time is tight.
Advanced Math
Advanced Math includes quadratic and exponential equations, polynomials, and nonlinear functions. Recognizing function transformations and factoring patterns saves valuable time on test day.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
- Understand ratios, rates, and proportions
- Interpret tables, scatterplots, and graphs
- Calculate percentages and percentage change accurately
- Identify the difference between correlation and causation
Geometry and Trigonometry
This is the smallest content area but still matters. Focus on area and volume formulas, similar triangles, right-triangle trigonometry, and circle theorems. Reference the provided formula sheet, but memorize the most common ones.
Using Desmos Effectively
The built-in Desmos graphing calculator is one of the most powerful tools on the digital SAT. Learn to graph equations, find intersections, and evaluate functions visually. A tutor can show you when Desmos is faster than solving by hand.
