How to prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT, qualify for National Merit recognition, and use it as an SAT stepping stone.
The PSAT/NMSQT is more than a practice test. For high-scoring juniors, it is the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
What Is the PSAT/NMSQT?
The PSAT/NMSQT is a digital exam taken in October of junior year. It mirrors the SAT format and scoring scale, making it excellent SAT preparation as well as a scholarship qualifier.
National Merit Qualification
- High scorers are named Commended Students or Semifinalists
- Semifinalists can advance to Finalist standing with an application
- Finalists may earn National Merit Scholarships
- Cutoff scores vary by state and are announced the following fall
How to Prepare
Because the PSAT mirrors the SAT, SAT preparation doubles as PSAT preparation. Focus on the same content areas and take timed digital practice tests to build familiarity with the format.
Timing Your Preparation
Start preparing the summer before junior year. The PSAT is in October, so a focused summer and early-fall study plan gives you the best chance at a qualifying score.
